FAQ's Filler

So what is Lip Filler?

Lip Fillers are one of our most popular treatments in Luxury, It can help to give luscious volume to the lips as well as reducing lines and providing definition to more mature lips. Lip filler is a dermal filler treatment in the lips. It can add volume to thin lips, correct uneven lip shape, smooth out smoker’s lines and we have also treated scars on the lips with dermal fillers.

What are Lip Fillers made of?

Lip fillers are made of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), which is a substance that naturally occurs in the dermis of the skin. It can be found in many beauty products, as it is a hydrophilic molecule, meaning that it attracts water. It can hold up to 1000 x its own weight in water making it an excellent hydrator. Some common brands of lip fillers are Restylane, Juvederm, Beloterol, Teosayal, Emervel now rebranded with Restylane, Perfectha etc.

Are Lip Fillers safe? Does it hurt?

Lip fillers are a cosmetic treatment, and like all medical procedures, there is always a chance that something could go wrong. However, if performed by experienced and qualified practitioners, it is a safe procedure.

It might be difficult to believe from the horror stories out there, but lip filler treatment is not that painful. Of course, the discomfort level will mostly depend on your aesthetician's technique and your own pain tolerance.

At Luxury, we can apply a strong numbing cream that acts quickly or in some cases, a dental block can be offered.

The lip filler even has a dose of the painkiller lidocaine mixed in the gel, which will further help to numb the area.

How much swelling is there are lip filler treatment?

This varies depending on the product used, the amount of lip filler used and the injector’s technique. There is always some degree of swelling which naturally resolves over a week or two. Application of ice post treatment helps to reduce swelling.

How long does it take?

The initial procedure will generally take approximately 1 ½ hours; there are records to establish, photographs to take, desired outcome to discuss, the procedure to perform and the aftercare requirements to discuss.

* Consultation required before service.

How long does it last?

he HA lip filler gel will last at least 6 months according to the manufacturer’s literature. However in reality, we have found that lip filler treatments have lasted much longer, in some cases well over 12 months. Please remember when the initial swelling goes down, you may mistake that for the filler not lasting. In these cases, if you prefer the fuller look, another treatment session will help to achieve that.

Do I need to prep before I come in?

One Week Prior to Lip Injections

  • Avoid blood thinning over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, Motrin, ibuprofen, and Aleve.
  • Avoid supplements, including St. John’s Wort, Gingko biloba, primrose oil, garlic, ginseng, and Vitamin E.

2 Days Prior to Injections

  • Avoid topical products such as Tretinoin (Retin-A), Retinol, Retinoids, Glycolic Acid, or any “anti-aging” products.
  • Avoid waxing, bleaching, tweezing, or using hair removal cream on the area to be treated.
  • Do start taking Arnica two days prior to the procedure. (This is not required, but it will help to lessen bruising.)

24 Hours Prior to Injections

  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages 24 hours prior.

General Recommendations

  • If you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another eruption of cold sores. Please let your physician assistant know if you are prone.
  • Do not use dermal fillers if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, are allergic to any ingredients, or suffer from neurological disorders. Please inform us if you have any questions about this prior to your treatment.

Aftercare

  • Your lips will likely be swollen after the procedure. You may also notice some redness or bruising at the injections sites, which is normal. Most side effects will be minor, and you will be able to resume most activities once the procedure is done.
  • Apply ice to your lips afterward using an ice pack or an ice cube covered in cloth (so it doesn’t stick to the lip and cause pain). This will help ease swelling, ithcing, bruising, and any other pain.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours after you get lip or any other dermal fillers. Elevated blood pressure and heart rate from exercise may make swelling or bruising worse. You can take Arnica for bruising if your doctor approves. It’s fine to engage in light activity like walking.
  • Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water will help your body heal.
  • Eat plenty of hydrating fruits and vegetables and try to avoid excess sodium, which may worsen swelling.
  • Avoid high temperatures like steam rooms, saunas, or heated exercise classes for 48 hours after treatment. High heat can make swelling more pronounced.
  • Ask your doctor which painkillers are OK to take in the days after your treatment. Normally Tylenol will be fine, but not blood-thinning medications like ibuprofen.
  • If you’re getting lip fillers for a specific event, make sure to leave plenty of time in between the procedure and the event to allow your lips to properly recover.
  • Try to sleep with your head elevated on pillows to reduce swelling. Do not sleep on your face.
  • Avoid makeup on your lips for up to 24 hours after.
